Earth Day 2021

There is no Planet B. We must look after the health and wellbeing of Mother Nature. Sustainability is a word for everyday.

Past, present, future

1970 was the first ever Earth Day event. When 20 million people in the US take to the streets to demand clean air and water. The day became an international campaign in 1990. It went 'global'. Some would now say viral. Earth Day engages more than 1 billion people every year...

Earth Day 2020 marked 50 years and saw global emissions plummet by a record 5.6 per cent due to lockdowns.

2021's theme... 'Restore Our Earth'. Focussing on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems.

Every day is Earth Day, but this particular day, April 22nd shines a brighter light on the topic, putting environmental issues centre stage.

Green living

How many times have you left for the shops to run back and grab the reusable bags?

Never leave the house without your reusable coffee cup?...Us neither.

We've ditched cling film for beeswax wraps and we
all own a Chilly's bottle.

Sustainable alternatives... Beauty refills. Bamboo containers. Eco-friendly cleaning products. Reusable straws. Sustainable fashion.

Sustainability, much more than a buzzword

We have the ability to make a difference in every industry.

We have a responsibility to deliver... Johnny Caddick, Moda MD explains "our passion is creating places and spaces people want to call home. We invest in communities with a view to operating there long into the future. We want our communities to be vibrant, inclusive and sustainable places.

That requires weaving our long-term thinking into everything we do: choice of location and characteristics of the land; procurement and construction; the tech we put into our buildings; our operations and management; and the role we play in the communities we invest in.

We believe a sustainable building should have a sustainable location. All our sites are brownfield sites – recycled land given new purpose."

Moda build with the planet in mind, from locations to technology, and we're pushing the sustainable boundaries to continue to reduce our footprint.

Our flagship neighbourhood Moda, Angel Gardens in Manchester has a Smart retrofit with deployed IoT throughout.

Moda, The Lexington, our newest neighbourhood opening this Summer in Liverpool, will be a hybrid - again even smarter. As we started to integrate Smart tech during the design stage.

Edinburgh, Leeds and Birmingham will have complete digital infrastructure from blueprint stage, and all future neighbourhoods will be even Smarter based on learnings from the existing operational data.

A Moda Mission

To achieve green, zero-carbon living for the generations of the future, with sustainability goals in relation to placement, design and construction.

We opt for low-energy white goods and televisions courtesy of our brand collaboration with Samsung, photovoltaic solar panels, innovative renewable energy solutions and buying clean bulk energy.

We're a founding member of FOOTPRINT Brighton. An organisation that aims to address 'the built environment's' zero-carbon challenge.

With a seat on the advisory board of the Footprint Conference 2021, we’re starting and encouraging the conversation surrounding sustainability and zero carbon living.

Our mission with Utopi… convenience, health and wellbeing at the forefront of city living for you to live, work and play in the greenest way.

We want to be setting targets for our communities on how much we can reduce waste each month, and start incentivising residents to hit targets...

Using the MyModa app we will soon be able to send personalised notifications, in real time, reminding our communities to close a window, turn off the lights or lower the temperature!

It's all about the data... using it to show the meaningful sums of money saved each year, simply by carrying out the smallest actions that will help tackle climate change long term.

Together, the Moda community - that's residents, the team and neighbours in the Moda cities - can take action together, that will help to create a more sustainable future.

We're constantly asking what more can we do? What can we do better? How do we build an even more sustainable place to live?

Think about it...

The more educated, aware and conscious we all are, the quicker we will see changes being made...

If you want to look after the health and wellbeing of the planet and get involved, head over EarthDay.org for inspiration, facts, a toolkit, basically everything you need to educate yourself and make a difference.

  • Plant a tree or three... did you know 1 tree can filter up to 60 pounds of pollutants from the air each year!

  • Walk or bike where you can... good for the earth, good for our health.

  • Recycle, reuse, reuse, reuse and repeat.

  • Be conscious of the energy we use... switch off that light, unplug that charger.

In the words of Wendell Berry, “the Earth is what we all have in common."
