18 Moda recommendations of new openings in our cities

30 / 04 / 2024

These Moda cities just get better and better, with new and exciting hot spots opening on the reg.

Here’s a few we’re looking forward to opening this year, whether you’re after a night on the town with your mates, a quiet cocktail or something a little more romantic… we’ve got you covered.

  1. Skof Manchester - We’re getting a new neighbour! Skof is the new venture from Chef Simon Rogan, a protégé of the multi-Michelin star winning Chef Simon Rogan and executive chef of three starred L’Enclume. Opening in spring in the Hanover building within NOMA, the restaurant interior will reference the neighbourhood’s history and the building’s past as a cloth warehouse, Tom’s upbringing in the Lakes and his new home in Manchester, while dishes will be seasonal and feature local ingredients as well as produce from Our Farm, Simon Rogan’s farm in the Cartmel Valley.

  2. Medlock Canteen Manchester - Medlock Canteen, the latest concept from the team behind Belzan and Madre, will open in Spring. Taking inspiration from two distinct styles of eateries found on the opposite side of the Atlantic; Medlock Canteen is inspired by the informality, accessibility and hospitality of American Diners and Parisian Bistros with a menu centred around dishes ‘you know and love to eat’.

  3. Soho House Manchester - It’s finally happening - this year will see the long awaited opening of Soho House Manchester. We can’t wait to be sipping Picante’s by the rooftop pool - let’s just hope the Manchester weather holds up.

  4. Bavette Bistro Leeds - There’s no finer match than exquisite wine and high-calibre cookery. This year, one couple, united by their love of this true harmony, are bringing a collaboration between front-of house and kitchen to their new bistro in the leafy suburb of Horsforth. Sandy Jarvis met Clément Cousin while he was Sous Chef at Covent Garden’s Terroir, where they stocked low-intervention wines from Clément’s family vineyard in the Loire Valley. Eleven years on and after stints at reputable institutions such as Brawn, Claridge’s, The Culpeper, and Racine, husband and sommelier will open Bavette Bistro. Sourcing seasonal ingredients for a menu of classically inspired dishes, alongside a European natural wine list. Bavette is set to be a warm hearted neighbourhood favourite.

  5. Psycho Sandbar Leeds - It’s a new year and a new start for Michael O’Hare, the Michelin starred maverick chef from Middlesbrough. Michael has peeled back the curtain on his plans to develop his quirky Leeds based fine-dining restaurant. First opened in 2014, The Man Behind the Curtain has been the go-to for foodies favouring his Jackson Pollock plating within a brutalist settling, above Flannels department store. Citing Brexit and the pandemic as seismic shifts in the culinary scene, January welcomed the space rebranded as Psycho Sandbar, a more affordable a-la carte offering, with a fish heavy ‘surf shack’ style menu. Here’s hoping it makes gastronomic waves across the city in no time.

  6. White Cloth Hall Leeds – It’s easy to miss the White Cloth Hall, tucked away behind Leeds Corn Exchange on Crown Street, with its low domed clock tower and trio of ornate archways. However, this historic emblem of the city’s merchant wealth is due to be put back on the map thanks to a major refurbishment from the team behind the seminal city centre pub, Whitelocks Ale House. Fresh from their successful reno of the Meanwood Tavern, the ambition is to turn the Grade 2 listed building into a thriving beer and food hall. Showcasing a mix of local vendors and suppliers, this highly anticipated venue opens this spring.

  9. Pearly Cow Brighton – Continuing its success from two popular restaurants in York and Margate, Pearly Cow is set to open in Brighton in 2024. Located within the Guesthouse Hotel, No. 124 (also coming soon), the restaurant will take up the ground floor of this Regency-style listed building on Brighton seafront. The restaurant’s ethos is all about celebrating what “thrives nearby”, championing “sea fresh seafood, highest- welfare meat, and just picked plants”, with an emphasis on simplicity. This commitment to local produce means the restaurant menu will be unique to Brighton but, looking at the York and Margate menus, should include a selection of small plates, fresh seafood, and steaks cooked over a Robata open flamed grill.

  10. Bread Meat Wine Brighton – As one door closes, another one opens. That’s certainly the story here, as the closure of small plates restaurant, Isaac At, paves the way for a brand new venture. Backed by Isaac At’s founder, Isaac Bartlett Copeland, Meat Bread Wine is a new deli and wine bar set to open in the coming months.
It is the brainchild of Isaac At’s former sommelier Alex Preston (named one of the country’s top 25 sommeliers by Harpers) in collaboration with friend Maria Barney.
Located in the North Laines, the reimagined space looks set to house a deli section, as well as space to dine and drink in, with a range of high-end local produce, a focus on English wines, alongside unique varieties to choose from.

  11. Kraft Brighton - From the minds behind steak restaurant Carne in Hove, Brighton looks set to get a new burger restaurant with the unveiling of Kraft. Led by Carne’s Head Chef Sean Brailsford, who also owns Fumar Cozinha (which serves Portuguese cuisine with an Aussie twist), Kraft will be serving up burgers, but that’s about all we know just yet. Teasing the new concept, the Instagram bio for Kraft reads ‘BURGERS BEATS BOOZE. Coming Soon’, a trio we can absolutely get behind. While details are thin on the ground at this stage, we’re expecting to see a similar focus to its sister restaurant: high quality ingredients, served up in a relaxed setting. Watch this space.

  12. The Coal Shed Brighton – The Coal Shed is getting ready for an upgrade as it relocates to a bigger spot on North Street, cooking up an expanded menu of coal-grilled meats and fresh coastal catches. The new 142-cover restaurant promises to level up the experience, with a grand dining room housed in a historic glass-roofed orangery, a plush bar area, and no less than three private dining spaces accommodating up to 60 people. Diners can look forward to watching the chefs grill premium cuts o meat and seafood in the open-fire kitchen. There’s even an on-site ageing room for meats. The exact opening date is yet to be announced, but until then, you can carry on soaking up the vibes at its current location on Boyce’s Street.

  13. The Spanish Butcher Edinburgh - No longer will we have to travel to Glasgow to visit The Spanish Butcher - in 2024 it’s coming to Edinburgh. The award winning venue combines Spanish and Mediterranean inspired flavours serving up the finest grade Galician beef, the most premium Iberican Jamon and the freshest seafood. Choosing between their famous starters is impossible to pick from; the Chargrilled Octopus & Squid and Galician Fillet Sliders are some of the Moda team’s favourites. For mains, diners can choose from the Galician cuts or Scotch Cuts to share or their delicious House Cuts, complemented with a list of sauces, toppings and sides that, you’ve guessed it, are impossible to pick from. The one thing we can say is that leaving without trying the Manchego Truffle Chips would be a big mistake!

  14. Avery Edinburgh - Avery, Chef Rodney Wages’ Michelin-starred restaurant from San Francisco, is coming to Edinburgh this year. Avery shared the news on social media back in October claiming that he had fallen “in love with Edinburgh on holiday last year”. As a result, he’s closing his Michelin-starred restaurant in the USA, moving over and setting up in Stockbridge with plans to own a farm to farm and grow the ingredients for the restaurants. The Avery is set to open in December but we’re sure it’ll be worth the wait.

  16. Sole Club Glasgow - It’s set to be a busy year for Nico and his team with three new openings in the city this year. First up was the opening Six by Nico Merchant City in Jan - the new flagship location. Following suit will be Sole Club, a new fish restaurant and elevated chippy (fingers crossed taking inspiration from Six by Nico’s famous Chippy menu!).

  17. The Indian Taproom Birmingham - Local favourite the Indian Brewery is taking over an incredible warehouse space just off Saint Paul’s Square in the Jewellery Quarter. Set to open in May, the new venue will boast a state-of-the-art brewery and taproom. With 25 taps there’s a huge selection of beer to be enjoyed in the taproom which will overlook the brewery so you can sip away and enjoy the action. Accompanied by an Indian food menu and sports screenings we can see ourselves spending a good few weekends here.

  18. New spots to visit Birmingham - It’s been all go in Birmingham recently, residents there are spoilt for choice with so many new openings. Having recently relocated from South Africa, Riverine Rabbit is one to add to your list asap. Combining South African flavours with seasonal British produce we’re pretty certain you’re going to want to try everything on the menu.
This season’s most exciting pop-up comes from Brad and Holly Carter, who can be found in Eighteen at 103 Colmore Row unitil the end of May. Offering a unqiue chef’s table experience in “The Board Room” at Eighteen, diners can expect the finest UK produce with perfectly paired drinks, all enjoyed and stunning views over the city.
Bodhi Boys Wine Bar is our new favourite drinking spot - this cool little bar has the most envious wine cellar in the city with a list that can be enjoyed alongside a mouthwatering menu of small plates curated by the team from sister venue 670 grams.
