10 Capitano
Inspired by true events, director Matteo Garrone provides a devastatingly blunt reminder of the migration crisis in this Oscar nominated drama.
In their native Senegal, we meet Seydou and Moussa (played by acting newcomers Seydou Sarr and Moustapha Fall), two cousins who’ve spent months doing secret jobs behind their mothers’ backs and now have enough money to travel from Dakar to the shores of Italy, where their dream of becoming music sensations awaits. It doesn’t take long for the boys’ fantasies to be pierced by the harshness of reality as they journey through a perilous Saharan desert, all whilst trying to evade the deadly presence of Libyan rebels.
Despite relentless hardships, Seydou’s ability to dream, with the help of a spiritual shaman, conjures beautiful moments as he travels home to draw strength from the ones he left behind. But will it be enough to see him through? A box of tissues and some comfort Ben & Jerry’s is advised.

Challengers
Luca Guadagnino AKA the Maestro of Heartache is leaving it all out of the court as two struggling tennis pros vie not only for their sporting integrity but for the affections of Zendaya in this steamy love triangle hit. The Euphoria star plays Tashi, a former tennis prodigy turned coach who enters her out-of-form (romantically and professionally) husband, Art, into a ‘Challengers’ tournament, where he can compete against some unranked players in the hopes of redeeming his flailing confidence. Little does she know that Art has been pitted against the undeniably charismatic Patrick, Art’s former best friend and Zendaya’s ex love interest. Expect flared tempers, smashed rackets and sex scenes that’ll get you hot under your tennis collar.

Monkey Man
If you thought Dev Patel couldn’t add anything else to his already stellar creative bow you’d be sorely mistaken. The former Skins alumni directs and stars this blood-soaked revenge thriller that sees our enigmatic hero Kid, (played by Patel) wreak havoc on the rich and corrupt who played a part in his village being burned to the ground and left his mother to die. Did I mention that Kid does all of this whilst donning a Deity-inspired monkey mask?
Don’t assume that this is your run-of-the-mill action film that relies on punch combos and its violent use of kitchen utensils. Patel delves deep into the current sociopolitical situation in India, highlighting how a corrupt system uses faith as a ploy for personal and financial gain. If this is what Dev can do with his directorial debut, I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us next.

Civil War
A group of war correspondents travel to DC hoping to secure an interview with the soon-to-be overthrown President (played by a Trump-esque Nick Offerman) in Alex Garland’s political dystopian thriller. Kirsten Dunst gives a sublime performance as Lee Smith, a frontline photographer who’s trying to capture the dying embers of an American civil war alongside her charismatic and story-hungry reporter friend Joel (Wagner Mourou). Spanners are thrown into the works when mentor and friend, Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) and ingenuous cub trying to make a name for herself, Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), force their way onto the trip. Their journey becomes a horrifying picture book of near-death misses and a chilling came from Jesse Plemons serves as a reminder of how merciless war can be.
There’s never an outright explanation as to why America is at war with itself - that isn’t the story Garland is interested in telling. He’s choosing to explore our consumption of conflict and how it’s effecting the way we empathise with one another.
